From 1 July, there’s an important update to the National Immunisation Program that means more Australians can now access the FREE pneumococcal vaccine.
This change lowers the eligible age from 75+ to 65+, helping protect more people earlier against pneumococcal disease.
So what is pneumococcal disease?
It is an infection caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can lead to serious illnesses such as:
• Pneumonia (lung infection)
• Meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord lining)
• Bloodstream infections
These conditions can become serious quickly, particularly in older adults or those with certain medical conditions.
The good news is vaccination is a safe and effective way to help reduce your risk.
You may now be eligible if you are:
• 65 years and over (previously 75+)
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults aged 25 years and over
• Adults aged 18 years and over with certain medical risk conditions
