Finding what feels right for you! The answer: There is no single right choice.
Just the option that fits your body, your values, and the season of life you are in. Contraception is about more than preventing pregnancy. It can shape how you feel day to day, your mood, your energy, your bleeding, and your sense of balance. That is why choice, understanding, and compassionate care matter.
Some common contraception options in Australia:
- Hormonal IUD. A small T shaped device placed in the uterus by a trained clinician. Releases a low dose of progesterone that works mostly locally. Many people experience fewer whole body side effects. Lasts 5 to 8 years depending on the type.
- Copper IUD. A hormone free option placed in the uterus. Uses copper to prevent pregnancy. Lasts 5 to 10 years depending on the device.
- Implanon. A small rod placed under the skin of the upper arm. Releases progesterone into the bloodstream. Lasts up to 3 years.
- The pill and the mini pill. Taken daily. The combined pill contains oestrogen and progesterone. The mini pill contains progesterone only. Works while taken consistently.
- Depo Provera injection. A progesterone only injection given by a healthcare professional. Lasts around 12 weeks.
- Condoms. A barrier method used during sex. Single use.
- Cycle tracking. Involves learning your fertile and non fertile days. May include tracking periods, temperature, cervical mucus, or working with a GP trained in fertility awareness. Requires daily attention and awareness.
