If your travels take you to parts of Africa or South America, thereβs one small step that can completely shape your journey: getting protected against yellow fever.
β
β So, what actually is yellow fever?
Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. In serious cases, it can lead to jaundice, bleeding, organ failure, and sometimes death. There is no specific cure, which is why prevention through vaccination is essential.
β
β Where might you need it?
Many tropical countries in Africa and South America remain endemic for yellow fever, and some require proof of vaccination as a condition of entry. Even if you are just transiting through a yellow fever risk country, vaccination (and a valid international certificate) may be required.
β
β Why this vaccine is worth your time
According to Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, travellers aged 9 months or older who are going to a yellow feverβrisk area are recommended to receive a single dose of the vaccine. Since a single dose usually provides long-lasting (life long) protection, this is one of those rare pre-travel health steps thatβs quick, reliable, and can save you from serious risk abroad. Even vaccinated travellers are encouraged to take mosquito-bite precautions: use repellents, wear light-coloured long clothing, use mosquito nets/screens and avoid being bitten, especially during the day when the mosquitoes that transmit yellow fever tend to bite.
β
β What Australia says you need to know on return:
If you arrive in Australia within 6 days of leaving a yellow fever risk country (overseas stay overnight or longer), you may be asked to show a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) against yellow fever. Only accredited vaccination clinics (us!) approved by state/territory health authorities, are allowed to administer yellow fever vaccine and issue valid certificates.
