From 15 May, a new government funded RSV vaccine will be available under the National Immunisation Program to help protect older Australians and those most at risk.If you’ve got a parent, grandparent, or loved one in this age group, this is something worth knowing about.Who is eligible? This vaccine will be free for:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over

What is RSV?RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a very common respiratory virus that spreads easily, especially in the colder months. For most people, it feels like a regular cold. But for older adults, it can sometimes become much more serious, leading to complications like pneumonia or hospital admission. Why this mattersAs we get older, our immune system naturally becomes less able to fight off infections.RSV is one of the leading causes of severe respiratory illness in older Australians, particularly during winter. This vaccine program is aimed at helping to:

  • Reduce hospital admissions
  • Protect those most at risk
  • Support healthier ageing and independence

What does the vaccine involve? The vaccine is given as a single dose.It can reduce the risk of severe illness and complications, and in many cases can be given at the same time as your flu vaccine.Where can I get it?Eligible patients will be able to access the vaccine through:

  • GP clinics
  • Some pharmacies
