Just like the rest of our spaces, our medicine cabinets deserve a little reset every now and then.
Take a few minutes to check what you have at home and clear out anything that’s expired, no longer needed, or no longer part of your current care.
But before you reach for the bin, sink or loo, unwanted medicines need a little extra care when it comes to disposal.
Remember: Read → Remove → Return
Check expiry dates and take note of any medicines you no longer use or need.
Remove
Set aside anything that’s expired or unwanted, and remove any personal information from external packaging where appropriate.
Return
Take your unwanted medicines to your local community pharmacy, where they can be safely disposed of through the Return Unwanted Medicines program, completely free of charge.
Avoid putting medicines in your household rubbish or flushing them down the sink or toilet. Returning them to a pharmacy helps keep medicines out of the wrong hands and reduces their impact on our environment.
And if you come across needles or sharps during your clean-out, these need their own safe disposal pathway. Your pharmacist (or your friendly local GP clinic, aka us) can point you in the right direction.
