About Me

I am excited to work with the amazing team at Next Practice. I believe I am incredibly fortunate and privileged to closely engage with my patients by building long-term patient centred relationships. I strive for excellence in evidence based medicine, preventative care, health promotion/lifestyle, acute care, and minimising the complications of chronic conditions.

Dr Gihan de Mel is a specialist family physician from Melbourne, Australia. Gihan is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. He brings years of hospital and community-based experience. Gihan is passionate about utilising his skillset to become a positive contributor to the Prahran and wider Victorian community we serve.

Gihan studied at Monash University - Clayton and University of Notre Dame - Sydney. He trained at Monash Hospitals in Clayton, Dandenong and Berwick and Ballarat Base Hospital. He also completed placements in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Cambridge, UK. Prior to commencing medicine he worked as a Medical Researcher at the National Ageing Research Institute (University of Melbourne) where he had the opportunity strengthen his research skills.

His special interests include Preventative Care, Paediatrics, Chronic Health Management, Lifestyle Medicine and Digital Health/Health Tech. Outside medicine, Gihan loves spending time with his family, travelling and exploring cultures, cafes, coffee and cuisines.
